A section of the No Child Left Behind Act states that the U.S. military--Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines--is entitled to the names and contact information of all students in public high schools. This is to make easier for them to recruit you. But you, personally, don't have to provide that information. In fact, you can tell the school not to give your name or contact info to the military, and they have to listen. It's the law.
Unfortunately, under the current law, the school can't automatically keep their students' info from the military. They need you or your parents to tell them, in writing (a letter or an "opt-out form"), that you want your information withheld.
The school can still provide your information to colleges and jobs, if you want them to. Just because you tell the military "no" doesn't mean you say "no" to anyone else.
